    Tul Singh Gurung "Tulsi"

    Founder/IFMGA Mountain Guide

Tul Singh Gurung: A Trailblazer in Nepal’s Mountaineering and Tourism:

Born and raised in the heart of the Himalayas, Tul Singh Gurung—popularly known as Tulsi—is one of Nepal’s most influential figures in mountaineering and tourism. Hailing from the historic village of Laprak, Gorkha, where becoming a soldier is a childhood dream for many, Tulsi initially aspired to join the British Army. However, after not being selected, he found his true calling in the mountains—a turn of fate that would benefit both him and Nepal’s tourism industry.

Fueled by an unwavering passion for exploration and a deep love for the Himalayas, Tulsi dedicated himself to helping others discover Nepal’s breathtaking landscapes. His breakthrough came in 2008 when he summited Mount Everest (8,848m) with the SAMA Indian Expedition. From there, his mountaineering career soared, leading him to conquer some of the world’s most formidable peaks, including Cho Oyu (8,188m), Ama Dablam (6,856m), Mt. Elbrus (Russia, 5,642m), Mt. Blanc (France, 4,810m), and Mt. Olympus (USA, 4,200m). His achievements are even more remarkable considering his multiple ascents of Island Peak (6,189m) and Lobuche East (6,119m), having summited them five and three times, respectively.

Beyond his climbing feats, Tulsi has honed his skills as a mountaineering instructor and guide, participating in numerous national and international training programs. His leadership roles in Nepal’s mountaineering community are extensive—he is the President of the Manaslu Foundation, former General Secretary of the Nepal Mountaineering Instructors Association (NMIA), and both the former General Secretary and current President of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA). Additionally, he serves as an Executive Board Member and Instructor at the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), President of the Gorkha Alpine Club, Coordinator of the Rescue Committee at the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA), and a certified Member/Guide of the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA/UIAGM). Since 2022, he has also been a Training Committee Member of the International Union of Alpine Associations (UIAA).

Despite his remarkable influence on Nepal’s tourism and mountaineering sectors, Tulsi believes there is still much more to accomplish. Through the Himalaya Summit Club, his initiative, he aims to offer innovative and reliable tourism packages, as well as world-class mountaineering training courses. Known for his easy-going nature, sharp humor, and extensive knowledge, Tulsi isn’t just a guide or instructor—he’s a trusted friend to his clients, always ready to embrace new challenges and emerge victorious
